Year book designers test shot

Rather than just an image of us as the designers of the yearbook we decided to take an image of us working on the year book on the back table with the spreads on the wall. The idea bring the whole book together and the blank wall into a strong working environment.

Meeting feedback

Meeting feedback after a small meeting yesterday the feedback was generally good and a dramatic improvement to the previous layout. Therefore we will develop this idea to perfection and ensure that everything we do is to full perfection and totally finished ready to go to print on Friday and allowing the weekend for amendments.

Year book further developments

The layout have developed even further we now have a large range of spreads that accommodate for different set shot. as the set shots are so different I have accommodated for this and included colours bleeding of images and colour overlays for people who have less exciting images. However we have to consider where on the layout what is keeping constant. The two things that keep consistent on the page are the page number and name on the left hand side and the contact details on the right hand side the about is flexible and the imagery is much more flexible than the previous layout.

I still feel however that the cover needs alot more attention as it is vital that we get the cover right. People will not pick the book up if it is not right.
The set shots that are not as strong have been played with and we felt a clever way of making them less impactful would be to put a colour overlay on them rather than make them smaller and significant the images are subtly different but still interesting as you can still see details in the photograph yet when you put close ups of the work then it relates back to the set shot.
THe black pages we did not like at first but these pages add alot to the book they make the book much more interesting and powerful and add an element of sophistication.

Within the spreads we have included a showcase page where there is hints of work on the page which state the name and then this relates back to the pages and makes people go back into pages.

Year book development test

After the previous discussion with Fred I tackled to make the layout much more interesting and exciting. Using different treatments for different spreads. The ones above are tests to how the spreads could look yet I still need to consider what happens when the set images are not as interesting. Bringing in the powerful red adds excitement into the spreads and injects bit of colour that can be used. The red can bring spot colour usage with our previous quote of +£80.00 for a spot colour on.
The old layout really do now seem less interesting and exciting there is no excitement to want to turn the page.

Progress tutorial with Fred

I had some good feedback with Fred learning where I need to push and develop within my last month. I have completed nearly 6 briefs and was questioning to complete three more. However with my tutorial with Fred I learnt that in order for me to complete all my briefs to a strong standard I will need to complete them to a high finish and consider the production of the briefs. As this is where  my downfall was in the last module and so i think that i may drop the brief for the occasions brief and concentrate on the following.

Completing the PAS architects project
Design Context
Yearbook
I also have a brief with a photography student that I would like to complete
There is also my own professional development to consider website portfolio portfolio book and stationary
End of year show
ensuring everything is blogged and up to date within my development work.

From the tutorial i I will also push the year book designs as we felt that I was looking at some really interesting things but this wasn't coming through within the yearbook and so for Tuesday within a prior meeting to the final meeting on wednesday myself and patrick will look at developing more designed ideas.

Mug Shot New Idea

We have ecided to craate a scene in studio 2 of teh wstudio and every one and thier work. The idae is insted of teh mug shots and will make the book feature the great studio space that we have here. The shootis to be set on Tuesday after the briefing and we will have to arrange a photographer to take the shot. We have two n mind Dom Dodd or Holly Lewis are the two contacts that we have atht may be available for the shoot.

Graham Typography Tutorial

We had a tutorial with Graham Tansley yesterday which was very helpful we looked deep into the finer details of the layout looking into the typography the layout line spacing leading kerning uppercase lowercase page numbers. The details of the page numbers change the layout slightly in working out how the reader reads the layout with the images been on the right with the name to just have the page numbers on the left may confuse the reader and make it less easy to navigate around the name will have to be tried on the other way around on horizontal to see if the layout reads better. The copy at the bottom should hang rather than be lifted up according to the length of the copy. The close ups need numbering and this is how we can incorporate the number two.
The cover needs to mirror exactly what is inside layout wise if not done corectly don't do it as it may look gimicy. The cover can play on the number two nicly and if done clever. Set up a number 2 set or use the shape as a starting point.  Thin about upper and lower case for the ame title. more inviting friendly cjange the @ on the typeface as looks strange.

Layouts developments

Structured lines and horizontal type leads the eye straight across the middle of the spread. The idea gives flexibility to the copy length and the name length yet the images are fairly structured. This should however be considered as it is about the images and the visually exciting aspect of the booklet.

Year book Crit

After a long discussion about the year books developments the changes we have to make to develop the year book are as follows:
More quotes for the year book from industry perhaps don't give a full dps to individual industry.
More information about the course and th estaff.
Make the quote pages more distinguishable
Same for the achievements
Ackowledgements
Mug shots page
Gives the book a pause inbetween the spreads.
Perhapes trying full bleed or bright pages or different stock.
Reversing out colour
linking the color to the covers

Go through all the images and make sure the image adjustments are to the full capability.
James Lauries shot was a good colour which is where we need to aim the photograph to be.

We talked however about the layout which was positive yet with the binding method of perfect binding we need to consider the gutter length used within the book and to aware that some names and work descriptions may be lost. We need to resolve this by adjusting the layout slightly.

We need also to ensure that we get the book bound by PUR which will make the book stronger.
Honors is Hons.

Front cover the name can not be new designers as tis is currently an exhibition.
We need to show Leeds college of art more.
We need to have the number two as a figure within the book

The spin needs to be the same so that it can run in a editions throughout the years.
think aabout blank grids yet liked the plain one with the typelayiut out at each end.
Look at WGSM for colours website

Try overlaying portraits to black or see what outcome get from it.
Stock needs to be really powerful spend more effort obn cover now as this is what will make people pick up the cover.

For next week final design absolute final designs so clients can just see each spread clearly and pick out slight things.  Fijal stock choices and prices. Pdf sent day before to pdf.  120 pages quote  for how much will it cost with spot varnish  cover stock costs
mock up needed.

Year book Layout development

This is the layout we plan to present during our crit on Wednesday we feel, that the layout is balanced and shows the work of of each student. The Format work in order of priority yet there are elements to the layout that are different and intresting. The combination of this help balence the layout. The earlier tests of working with full bleed images over powered the layout to much some images are not as strong as others and this needs to be consirred and creating the full bleed looked slightly clumbsy in not considereing this. The page also looked split away from the students close ups a and took away from the important aspect of the students work.
